Commonly Asked Questions about VNAP Products

MOO™:

Is it really organic?

Yes, our MOO™ products have gone through a strict review by NOFA (a leading organic products organization) and have been approved for commercial and home organic use.

What is the pH level of MOO DOO®?

Our MOO products have a neutral pH level. The numbers will vary a little bit, but are close to a pH of 7.

Can I plant directly into MOO DOO®?

MOO DOO® works best when it’s incorporated into a product such as MOO DIRT® or a topsoil. MOO DOO® is rich in nitrogen, and that nitrogen may burn tender seedlings. For best direct planting of seedlings, we recommend MOO MIX® or MOO GROW®.

Can I use MOO DOO® as a topdressing on my garden?

Absolutely! MOO DOO® works great as a  topdressing for perennials, vegetables, and flower beds. Its slow-release nitrogen is ideal for feeding plants during the growing season.

Do MOO products smell bad?

MOO™ products do have an earthy smell — not a strong manure smell, but rather as nature intended soil to smell. Many of our customers who have chemical sensitivities  comment that they can enjoy gardening again because of the lack of toxic odor connected with many inorganic gardening products. And, MOO™ products are safe for your pets!

Foster Brothers:

Is Foster Brothers Topsoil the same as Foster Brothers Composted Cow Manure?

No, Foster Brothers Topsoil can be used for lawn repair and as well as a base for gardens. Foster Brothers Composted Cow Manure has a higher level of nitrogen and needs to be mixed with topsoil.

Can you use Foster Brothers soils for mulch?

Yes!

General F.A.Q.:

Can we buy bagged products directly from Vermont Natural Ag Products, Inc.?

Vermont Natural Ag Products, Inc. does not sell bagged products to retail customers. As small business owners, we support the specialty garden centers and nurseries that sell VNAP products. Because of this, we intentionally do not sell to big box stores. If you cannot find our products at your local garden center, give us a call and we can help you locate another nearby retailer. We want you to love using our products, so we will work hard to find you a sales source!

If I don’t use up all of the product I bought this year, can I still use it next year?

Any of our products, if stored in a dry area, can be reused the following year. Remember, though, that some products when applied in the fall will actually benefit your garden in the spring! Nitrogen is released slowly over time and your garden will fertilize itself while it’s covered in snow.

Does compost leach?

To an extent, it does. This isn’t a problem if you are using it in a raised bed garden or a more traditional form of garden. It can, however, present a challenge if you are container gardening. We recommend the use of a “catch pan” under the containers to keep any stray fluids off your deck!

How much product do I need?

This depends on the quality of your existing soil and what you are planting. Testing your soil first can help determine which product will produce optimum results.

What is the difference between MOO™ products and Foster Brothers Farm products?

MOO products have all gone through the approval process for organic products. Foster Brothers products have not gone through the process and some contain additional additives.

What should I use around my trees and shrubs?

Many people prefer a darker mulch around their trees and shrubs, and MOO PLANT™ fits the bill! The Foster Brothers line has a nutrient-rich Shrub and Tree mix, which is also very effective.

What do I start my seeds in?

MOO START® is a nice product for starting seeds. It has a delicate texture and its composition retains water, reducing your watering time.

I’m planting perennials, and I have clay soil. How should I prepare it?

We suggest mixing compost, such as MOO DOO® or MOO COMPOST®, into your existing soil. This will add organic matter to the clay, making it easier to work with. When you plant your perennials, they will be well fed, and the soil will provide better drainage.

How can I improve my sandy soil?

Sandy soil needs compost. Added compost helps retain water, and it also feeds nutrients to your plants. MOO DOO® and MOO COMPOST® will achieve both of these goals while providing you with healthy, natural soil.
